The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal today announces the honorees of our annual Fast 50 awards, celebrating the Twin Cities’ fastest-growing, privately held companies by revenue growth.

However, there’s a caveat this year: There are only 47 honorees on our Fast 50 List.

We started seeking nominations for our 2024 awards in mid-May, with a comfortable cushion of companies throwing their hat in the ring. Since the pandemic, though, growth has been a fickle thing.

After struggling in 2020, many companies saw a burst of activity and revenue in 2021 and 2022 due to pent-up demand for services and products. When 2023 rolled around, high inflation and other economic headwinds hit many industries. This matters because one of the eligibility requirements of our Fast 50 awards is year-over-year revenue growth — so even if a company’s revenue in 2023 was higher than the base year of this year’s project (2021), if it was lower than 2022 numbers by even a little, that company can’t be included on the list.

Other eligibility requirements for The List of fastest-growing private companies include: They must be independently owned, privately held, for-profit businesses headquartered in the Twin Cities 24-county metro area. They must have had at least $1 million in revenue for the base year of the project, which was 2021. Also, participating companies had to submit financial statements to our accounting partner Boulay Group, which was tasked with analyzing those documents to ensure eligibility and verify revenue numbers — a step that causes some private companies to balk at.

So, it’s no small feat to be named a Fast 50 honoree.

Our honorees will be featured in more depth in the Business Journal’s annual Fast 50 special publication Friday, Oct. 25, where their rankings and their revenue growth rates will be revealed. Prior to that, our honorees will be celebrated at a private awards event Thursday, Oct. 24 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
